Opening Reception: Thursday, March 31, 6-9PM, with gallery talk by Virginia Lee Montgomery
Gallery Hours: Thursday and Friday, 12-5PM
The Elaine L. Jacob Gallery, Wayne State University (WSU), is pleased to present DOUBLE LIFE, March 31 through May 20, 2022, with the reception to be schedule on Thursday, March 31, 6-9PM.
In this exhibition, artists engage in experiments in saliency detection at the intersection of the human soma and the lens-based technologies that saturate our environment. Central to these aesthetic experiments are acts of excavation, in which the artists use the camera to draw our focus into intimate contemplation of material detail. Through processes that might be described in terms of defamiliarization or estrangement, the artists use the double lives of objects, spaces and bodies to reveal the seen-unseen, establishing a tension between that which we draw forward and that which we suppress.
This exhibition was curated by Mary Ann Anderson and Richard Haley and features works by the following artists: Allana Clarke, Maria Gaspar, Ryan Lauterio, Virginia Lee Montgomery, Eleanor Oakes, Aki Sasamoto, Bailey Scieszka, Kenneth Tam, and Cody Vanderkaay.
Special programming coinciding with the exhibition will include a gallery talk by Virginia Lee Montgomery, Thursday, March 31, 6PM. The talk will be held at the Elaine L. Jacob Gallery WSU.
